The 2012/2013 school year marks the inaugural edition of Aglaun, and the journal has evolved from a nameless idea to a complete first edition that celebrates and showcases creative and academic talents. This has been a collaborative effort: on a large scale, the Iḷisaġvik community submitted ideas and voted on a name; on a more minute level, editors Myrna Sarren and Mirri Glasson-Darling have worked diligently to select, design, and actualize the journal.

A literary journal like Aglaun would not exist without your submissions: the art, photography, poetry, fiction, personal and/or academic essays that you craft. Aglaun means "pen" (or a writing implement of some nature) and the simplicity of our journal's name illustrates the sincere act of creating. Barrow, Alaska is a land of artistry and beauty, and that is reflected in the contents of our Winter 2012 and Spring 2013 edition. As you read through the broad scope of publications—from Mary Sage's incisive memoir on "English 111x" to Denise Merat's lyrical "Zero Below" to Jacqueline Aamodt's keen study of "Digestive Health Then and Now"mash;the editors invite you to first enjoy this edition's offerings, and then vote for your favorite in the Reader's Choice Award (voting closes at the end of March).

Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't offer a huge "thank you" to Iḷisaġvik's Instruction department for supporting Aglaun, to Myrna Sarren and Mirri Glasson-Darling for being such phenomenal editors, and to Peter Anderegg for facilitating and guiding the design of the journal

Warm Regards,
Caitlin Walls
